Kathryn Watson Lattice Rectangular Stoneware Sculpture
About the piece
Dark Red Stoneware Sculpture. An urban walk on a tarmac path revealed a scattering of decaying leaf stems forming a criss-cross pattern. These patterns were drawn on a slab of clay and then carved to create intersecting three dimensional pieces. Different forms and orientations have been explored. Thick strips of clay have also been stacked then partially glazed and wired to create towers.

About the artist
During her degree and masters in Fine Art, Watson’s practice focused on painting and collage which gradually developed into assemblage and eventually into sculpture. She explored and experimented with natural materials and became interested in the way work interacts with its environment, especially the outdoors.
Watson is particularly influenced by the work of Kurt Schwitters, Gordon Matta Clark, Robert Rauschenberg and Richard Serra. Their processes of constructing and deconstructing structures within space resonated with her own practice. After relocating to Sheffield where she grew up, Watson set up a studio in her home, acquired a kiln and now uses her garden and home to place my ceramics.
She rediscovered the city centre architecture and the surrounding Peak District and this along with the flora and fauna from her garden provides the stimulus for much of her work.
