Claire Allam Pit Fired Vessel 4
About the piece
Vibrant pit fired vase. Suitable as a stand-alone ornament or for dried flowers. Organic additions such as seaweed were added to the firing, giving texture, to make this a unique, one-off piece. It is red on a white ground with black accents. It is 13 cm tall and finished with a coating of wax polish, giving a satin sheen. It is not water-tight or food safe.
Approximately 19cm Height x 7cm Diameter
About the artist
Claire Allam has been a maker for as long as she can remember, with a lifelong passion for working with clay that began in childhood. Her work is deeply inspired by natural forms and landscapes, resulting in one-of-a-kind pieces and limited series.
Starting with sketches and photographs, Claire often creates small maquettes before selecting materials and techniques that best suit each project. Both porcelain and stoneware feature prominently in her practice, shaped into clean, simple forms with minimal yet expressive surface markings using oxides and slips.
Fascinated by the interaction between form and fire, she embraces the unpredictability of the firing process. Preferring wood kilns, pit firing, and raku—often leaving pieces unglazed—she highlights the raw, elemental nature of ceramics. For Claire, clay is a transformation of earth and water through air and fire, and she celebrates the organic beauty that emerges from this alchemy.
